Cyril, 38, young husband of Louise (70) - "the Duchess" - is doing his Tai-Shi in a corner of the grounds of the Domaine du Manoir. A crowbar struck the back of his neck, killing him instantly.
The investigation is entrusted to Maud Arthuis, who receives unexpected help from Lucien Labeguerri, a private detective commissioned by Louise's daughter Estelle. She is still convinced that it was an abuse of weakness.
Who killed Cyril? Louise's daughter? A hunter deprived of his usual hunting ground? Cyril's ex-girlfriend? The steward of the Manoir?
Maud is over 8 months pregnant, but a widow: the father of the child she is carrying died of a stroke early in her pregnancy.
Maud and Lucien are in for more than a few surprises, as they are forced to confide in each other about their painful lives... when yet another murder occurs.
